FORM, deliberate tactility

Floor Merjenburgh explores the tension between intention and intuition, between the deliberate act of making and the tactile immediacy of material. Each sculpture begins as a controlled gesture, shaped and positioned with care, before being released to gravity.

As the clay settles, it records the traces of its own transformation: soft folds, subtle shifts, and the memory of its original shape.

FORM invites us to look where control gives way to sensation, and where form becomes a record of experience.

MERGED BY GRAVITY

When clay is shaped by a mold, it acquires a final form. However, right when it comes out of the mold, the material is still supple and elastic. These two characteristics are paramount in the creation process of Merged by Gravity. A play unfolds between me and the material, in which I allow two separate objects to deform one another through the force of gravity. I guide the objects, but the shaping occurs due to the properties of the material and chance.

The connection between the two objects, which have found and molded each other, is unique. Traces of the initial form of the clay objects remain visible, and together, they create an entirely new shape. From that point on, they belong together.

MERGED BY GRAVITY - Glazed

The glazed pieces add extra depth to the work. During firing, the glaze flows away from raised edges and collects in deeper areas. This enhances the contrast in the pieces, making the deformation even more pronounced. The combination of the shape and gloss creates a vibrant whole.
